This post is about Don - and his great heart surgery recovery.

The Whatcom Volunteer Center in Bellingham has a fund raiser walk/run event once a year. They sponsor and run the event - but the funds raised by each person or group can be donated to your favorite charity. The event is called The Human Race - and draws huge crowds each year. Some dress up in interesting costumes - some make banners - some dress alike.
And everyone walks or runs . . .
The WVC sponsors this event to help small organizations that can't afford to sponsor their own fund raiser. Don's work, Cascade Vocational Services, is entering a team of walkers this year.
Some background on Don's open heart surgery, for those of you who are new readers.
The date of The Human Race this year is June 12 - exactly one year from Don's open heart surgery to repair the mitral valve. On the anniversary of his heart surgery Don is doing the 5K walk/run in The Human Race. He will be walking with other members from his work, and all their pledges will go to Cascade Vocational Services - since they are a non-profit organization. Isn't this the greatest way to earn money? Anyone can pledge as much as they like per mile, or they can pledge a specific amount for the entire walk.
Don has always done a lot of walking outdoors and also uses his treadmill every day. He's already worn one treadmill out. Ben calls it the "dreadmill". His cardiologist has given his approval and is very pleased that Don is participating. After Don's most recent echocardiogram the good news was that his heart is now back to normal - which is very impressive - since it wasn't normal before the surgery, so he has come a long ways.
There will be special events for kids at the park where The Human Race starts - and a meal supplied for walkers/runners when they have finished their course. The WVC is going to take pictures of Don and his co-workers because of his special story. We are excited, and hope that next Saturday is not rainy - but rainy or not - let the walking/running begin!
WOW I can't beleve it's been a whole year since Don's surgery and it's so very wonderful to hear that his heart is back to normal!! Kudos to Don for participating in the walk!

What a great way to raise money and show appreciation for wonderful recovery that Don has made. My DIL is doing a similar event running a half marathon to raise money for the ICU at Addenbrookes Hospital which saved my grandson's life last year. Good luck to Don, hope he and his colleagues raise lots of money.
ReplyDeleteJo that is such wonderful news! Will you be participating in the walk/run as well? Then you could take some action shots. Hope the weather cooperates, but colorful rain slickers would look nice too. Oh, and I forgot to answer your question about my camera...it's a Canon PowerShot with a combination fixed wide angle lens/20X zoom!
ReplyDeleteIt is just fantastic that Don has recovered so well and can participate in such a wonderful fundraiser. Good luck to him and his work buddies.
ReplyDeleteWow, I am glad Don is doing well. I wish him luck on the walk.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy that things are so wonderful with Don. It doesn't seem that long ago that we were all taking chances on that quilt as part of a fundraiser for his surgical expenses....and now he is in the walking/running event!!! Miracles DO happen!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a difference a year makes! And what a great way to celebrate. Go Don!
