What I am working on - Farmer Quilt

I started this quilt last year, it is machine appliqued. My friend Susannah made this quilt, and I couldn't wait to make one too. It is called the Farmer Quilt - with activities that you might find on the farm.

I still need to do some hand embroidery on some of the blocks - like the clothesline on the block below. It is a lot of fun to work on - the thing that took the longest was picking out the many fabrics for the blocks.

For the background I used several different tans.

Farmer's wife hanging out the laundry . . .

An occasional rest and some hot tea . . .

Sweet summer bride . . .

Making a quilt - once I embroider a needle and thread in her hand . . .

Learning in a one-room-school . . .

Iron on Tuesday . . .

Milking the cow - every day . . .

Apparently two different breeds of cow . . .

Taking turns on the swing (when the rope is embroidered)

Checking the corn crop . . .

Feeding the chickens - those tear drop shapes will become chickens with some clever embroidery.

Rocking the baby in the afternoon, under the big tree in the yard . . .

A portrait in the barnyard . . .

What are you working on these days?

  3. What a wonderful quilt it will make. I am just finishing up my bricks quilt for our bed (made of the Wee Wonderland Moda collection) and then I will put together some blocks I have had around for a couple years. You would like them. One set is 30's fabrics (reproductions) of bow ties and the other is stars using florals and a coordinating solid. Both are very soft and pretty. I have to figure a sashing for the floral blocks, no sashing for the bow tie blocks.

I had better give Mr. Magpie his laptop back, or he's going to be upset. This time, I'm really gone!

  10. These blocks are so beautiful, and your work so precise. It was fun for me to notice that I have many of these exact same fabrics in my stash. I hope you'll show the finished product when it's done.

  12. Quite a project. You are doing a beautiful job. The embroidery will certainly be the final touch for some of the blocks, particularly the chickens. I do love the two different cows.
