A couple Saturdays ago we went to breakfast with friends Julee and Tony. We always have such a good time with them and after a hearty breakfast we headed out to do some thrift store shopping. First stop I found these two vintage crib quilts. It looks like they were made by the same person, who appears to have been very thrifty with her fabrics. When she didn't have enough of one color she added in another to finish up the quilts.
A new quilt to wrap the new baby in - pinks and blues - it will be grand for the boy or girl baby soon to arrive. Stitches tiny, just right for a baby. But there isn't enough of the pale pink, so darker pink is substituted. Now the quilt is done and ready to fold into the crib until the day baby arrives.
Soft colors - the fabric is soft and fine. The days are warm and sunny, but the baby will need a warm quilt when the winter winds blow.
Babies need many quilts - red and white will be happy colors for baby. Not enough red scraps in the sewing basket, but that is ok, come of the pinwheels can have less red, and the last two blocks will be pieced all of white. This quilt will be good for sunny days when baby gets to be outdoors in the summer. Folded away now, waiting for baby.
Nice Baby Quilts. Wish we knew the whole stories...Sad to see them in Thrift shops. The 'hearts and gizzard' block is one I get to make with Eleanor Burns new BOM online.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you showed these quilts, they were fun to see.
ReplyDeleteThese quilts must have been made with such love by someone who was poor and had to make do with whatever was to hand. The important thing is that they would have kept the baby warm. I love these quilts.
ReplyDeleteI can sympathize with running out of fabric - it's what I get for changing up the pattern after I started.
ReplyDeleteOk, I had to swing by here on my way out the backdoor..HA!
ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful vintage! Lucky you snagging these up and giving them a good home. Isn't it wonderful and fun to see how they improvise when they run out of the fabrics!
These are such beautiful quilts! I love the way they portray REAL life, making do with what you have. The baby probably thought they were more fun with the variations anyway. :-)
ReplyDeleteLovely blog and photos to match. cannot imagine parting with the red one...so different from others I've seen.
ReplyDeleteAs one poster said...the stories these quilts of old could tell. Also read previous post...always keep our eyes out for these quilts to get the loving they deserve.
Thanks for sharing the pictures. Reminds me of a quilt I was fortunate to receive that my husband's grandmother made. She did the same as this quilter - run out of one fabric - just use another. I absolutely love this quilt, which was headed for the trash before I rescued it!
ReplyDeleteWonderful stories you have created for these two darling baby quilts. You use your words so well.
ReplyDeleteHey there you! Are your people there? Are you all having fun yet?
ReplyDeleteI know you are! Just stopping by to see if all is well!!!
